SF6: The Perfect Gas for the Beaumont Utilities Industry

Coastal Welding Supply has become a significant provider of dielectric gases – also identified as insulating gases – for the Beaumont electrical utilities industry. These gases are used most often to either prevent or swiftly extinguish electrical discharges, for which their dielectric characteristics make them perfect. The most important of these gases and the one most purchased from us is sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

Utilities apply SF6 to electrically insulate high-voltage transformers, sulfur hexafluoride circuit breakers, switchgear, and other comparable types of hardware.

Where SF6 circuit breakers are involved, they’re pretty much replacing oil-filled circuit breakers (OCBs), which, given the fear of their being polluted with now-banned, environmentally toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are no longer favored.

The common use of SF6 under pressure in gas-insulated switchgear is because of its exhibiting a dielectric strength notably higher than air or dry nitrogen (the latter another gas in broad use by our utilities industry customers).

One major reward of SF6’s high electronegativity and density is that it lets the utilities industry diminish the size of electrical gear. This makes it possible to locate such gear in more-manageable indoor environments, as opposed to air-insulating it outdoors. Gas-insulated devices placed indoors is, of course, less likely to be affected by climate and pollution. Besides that, a controlled environment also helps ensure greater system dependability and longevity.

If for any reason you’re still not acquainted with SF6 and would like to understand more about its advantages in utilities industry application, get hold of Coastal Welding Supply, your Beaumont PurityPlus® Partner, today.
